Eating God's Way   

Taking the "Modern" out of Food


 One might add “…honor God with your bodies and what you put in them!” As Christians, we should already have some familiarity with fasting. Fasting is a sacred time in which Christians abstain from food, or other pleasures, and take the time to focus on God. But how many of us know that this spiritual act of obedience also has many natural positive healing effects on the body, God’s temple? In fact, several of the most popular, and effective “diets” are based on these principles. Cleansing and detoxification as a side effect of a fast are key components in many popular eating plans. With the adulteration of the foods we consume today, the detoxification that God prescribes is necessary now more than ever. His wisdom is indeed infinite!

In Daniel, chapter 1, Daniel himself takes on a challenge to show the value of a natural diet (v12) and goes on to prove its success (v15):

12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. Now, no one is telling you to become a complete vegetarian for the rest of your life.

In this passage, they were “tested” for only 10 days, and they actually ate solid wholesome foods. But  each of us must consider what God is saying about our own food consumption, and periods where He has prescribed cleansing through a fast.

Our 21st century lifestyle has added many diseases to the world. In fact, most of the world’s population is suffering from one or more of the numerous symptoms of ill health. After all, how many people do we know that suffer from things like; stress, headaches, tiredness, poor concentration, over weight, and that’s just for starters? It is estimated that over 65% of these symptoms are caused by what we do or do not put into our mouths Since modern life is causing so many health problems it stands to reason that, in order to return to good health, we need to take some of the ‘modern’ out of the equation and put more of the biblical nutritional principles back in.

One simple way to do this is to get back to the fundamentals of health and healing. There are many resources designed to help you do this, but first start with prayer, and periodic fasting, as the Holy Spirit leads you. You may also want to:

•Consider a “Daniel Fast.” since Daniel’s traverses the centuries between The Bible, Hippocrates and modern life,

•Search scripture and study to learn how God has created specific nutrients in our foods that have a profound impact on our health, all for the good of those man

•Ask God to guide you, to highlight those areas where you need to change your habits, and remember to trust Him for the strength to do so.

Knowing that your body is not your own can be a great motivator. As servants of the Lord, let us learn to care for His temple.
